In a move that pairs generosity with stringent conditions, Washington has pledged $2 billion for United Nations humanitarian programmes. However, this contribution came with a blunt warning for the global organization: it must "evolve or perish."

A Significant Pledge Amid Wider Budget Reductions

The funding announcement was made amid major cuts in US funding for global aid. Further cuts are expected from other major contributors including European nations. The US representative, President Trump's Under Secretary for Foreign Assistance, delivered the announcement alongside the UN's emergency relief chief.

"This contribution will be crucial for saving countless lives," stated the United Nations' relief coordinator. Yet, the $2 billion represents only a fraction of the United States' traditional spending, which were estimated at approximately $17 billion in the recent past.
